Embroider this sweater fleece poncho

How I did It

If you saw part 1 when I made this poncho out of sweater fleece without a pattern. I noticed the fabric was discolored along the fold where it was on the bolt. This was also a wonderful blank canvas to add lots and lots of embroidery.

I found this design on one of my favorite sites. The Embroidery Design (not affiliated) I purchased and edited it to change size and shape.  It was on sale for $1.75 at the time for the 6.9″ x 7.69″ size.

After downloading, I opened it using Inkscape software to make a copy and break the design apart into 3 sizes.

  1. The original size for the shoulders
  2. A V shape for the four corners.
  3. A small cluster to fill in at the hem of the shoulder line.

I repeated this design along the shoulder line on both sides for a total of 4 hoop-ings in the Janome RE20 hoop.  I ended up needing the small cluster design to make the design a tad longer along the shoulders.

This is how it looks when worn like a square wrap.

At each corner I added the V-shaped design for symmetry.

This is only a 2 color design and I used Simthread #307 Linen for the big leaves and #005 Silver for the small vine leaves.

This is what it looks like if you want to wear it on point (poncho style)

All in all, I like the way it turned out with tone on tone effect.  I think it goes great with jeans or yoga paints.

Other tips:

  • How to conserve stabilizer by creating an embroidery stabilizer window.
  • Find those sneeky embroidery files that won’t show up on your machine.  Remember to press the red “next” button since the designs are sorted by hoop size.

Since it is getting warmer here in Texas, I decided to list it on eBay for a short while to see how that goes.
