Troubleshoot Thread Breaks

If you’re experiencing thread breakage on your Janome Memory Craft 9850 sewing machine, don’t panic! It’s a common issue that can be solved with a bit of troubleshooting. In this post, I will walk you through some steps to help you identify the cause of the problem and fix it.

Step 1: Check your thread quality

The first thing to check is the quality of your thread. Poor quality thread can easily break and cause issues while sewing. Make sure you’re using high-quality thread that’s appropriate for your project and machine.  I like to use good ol all purpose polyester for sewing.  I use the New Bothread set for embroidery.

Step 2: Check your needle .

A dull or damaged needle can cause thread breakage. Make sure you’re using the correct size and type of needle for your fabric and project. Change your needle regularly, as it can become dull or bent after extended use.

Step 3: Check your thread path

Make sure your thread is correctly threaded through the machine. Incorrect threading can cause tension issues and thread breakage. Check your machine manual for the correct threading path and make sure your machine is properly threaded.  It is a common mistake to miss the small lead on the part that holds the needle.  It is important to make sure no parts of the path are missed.

Step 4: Check your tension settings

Incorrect tension settings can cause thread breakage. I have never needed to change the bobbin tension on my machine.  However, if you have made modifications this could be the problem.  There is a dial on the top of the machine that controls the pressure of the presser foot.  I set my machine to #5 for most sewing and #3 for embroidery and free motion quilting.

Step 5: Check for lint or debris

This is the most common problem for me.  Lint or debris in the machine can cause thread breakage. Clean your machine regularly, especially around the bobbin area and feed dogs. Use a soft brush or vacuum to remove any lint or debris.  Avoid canned air and it can blow the debris deep into the machine where only a technician can reach it.

Step 6: Check for mechanical issues

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there may be a mechanical problem with your machine. Take your machine to a qualified technician for inspection and repair.

In conclusion, troubleshooting thread breakage on your Janome Memory Craft 9850 sewing machine involves checking the quality of your thread, the condition of your needle, the threading path, the tension settings, and the cleanliness of your machine. With a bit of patience and persistence, you can identify the problem and get back to sewing in no time!
