Sew this sweater fleece poncho

Without a pattern

I scored a super deal on some of this gray sweater fleece.   I bought a pattern for a sweater jacket but then changed my mind and decided to turn it into a poncho wrap.

I created a video showing the process I went thru.  I ended up trimming down the proportions from a 58″ square.

materials

  • 2 1/4 yards of 60″ wide sweater fleece fabric
  • Matching sewing machine thread
  • Fabric marking pen
  • Fabric scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine

cutting list

  • Cut off salvage edge.
  • Cut a 58″ square of fabric for the poncho*.
  • Cut 28″ x 26″ rectangle for the collar.

* I ended up cutting smaller because I’m short

Method

make the neck hole

  1. Open fleece and fold corner to salvage edge to form a triangle.
  2. Fold triangle in half again.  You should have 2 folds and four layers.
  3. Measure 4” from the point to the side and make a mark.  Work around the triangle marking 4” from the point of the triangle.
  4. Draw a curved line by connecting the marks.
  5. Cut along the line and remove a perfect circle from the center of the square of fleece.

Make the Collar

  1. cut a piece of fleece 26” wide and 28” long
  2. Fold collar in half lengthwise with right sides together (RST)
  3. Using the medium stretch stitch, Stitch 1/2 along short edges and turn right side out.
  4. Lap one edge over the other by 1”  forming a circle and fold in half and mark and half again and mark.

  1. Mark center and quarter marks for the neck opening of poncho and turn wrong side out.
  2. insert the collar into the neck hole of the poncho.  With wrong sides together match the marks.  You may need to stretch the collar to ease the fabric.  Try not to stretch the neck opening.  Pin in place.
  3. Using the free arm of your machine, set machine to medium stretch stitch. and stitch around the neck opening with 1/2” seam allowance.
  4. Roll seam allowance toward neck edge of poncho and stitch again 1/4” from previous stitching to give the neck more stability.
  5. Form a narrow hem around the lower edge of the poncho by folding over 1/2” and stitch using Heirloom #15 decorative stitch on your Janome MC 9850.
