Very beginner free motion quilting

Simple Free motion quilt pattern

This is a simple to start using your Janome Memory Craft 9850 for free motion quilting.

There is a YouTube video to show the process.

Quilt as you go is a good way to begin machine quilting.  The benefits are:

  1. Work on blocks as your schedule allows.
  2. Piece and quilt individual blocks and experiment with different layouts.
  3. Connecting the blocks in rows and columns keeps most of the bulk to the left of the machine.
Whether to quilt top + batting only or  top + batting + backing is hotly contested in the QAYG fans.  I, personally, prefer to quilt the whole sandwich so that I don’t need to deal with the additional step of tying or stitching in the ditch.

Make a practice run

I recommend creating a small block quilt sandwich and start practicing trying stitching cursive e’s and then backwards e’s.

Choose a design

I took inspiration for this quilt pattern from the prints in my quilt.  I decided to use simple flowers and swirls in sort of a meander fashion.

I decided to practice with pen and paper to work out how I stitch around the block without having to cut threads or cross lines.

Some quilting gloves make it easier to control the fabric.

These are the needles I use without issue for my machine.
